My son and uncle have diabetes. My wife died of cancer. I know more about our health care system than I ever wanted to know, and I know that we have a great health care system. My family members have received the best health care services available in the world. The advances in diabetes care have been incredible. Soon after my son was diagnosed with diabetes, a new type of insulin was developed that is continuous, immediate-acting insulin. Then diabetes pumps were developed that provided a continuous source of insulin, similar to what our own bodies do. The measurement of blood sugars has greatly improved. Now there is research on combining an insulin pump with an instrument that continuously monitors the blood sugar, and combining those technologies so that insulin is continually provided to the body in the amount need. This will almost be like an artificial pancreas. The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes Research right in Denver is experimenting with a wide variety of creative solutions to diabetes.
All of this research is being done by private companies here in America. This research isn't being done in Canada, England, or anywhere else where there is government-run health care. Our health care system isn't perfect, but it is delivering real world health care advances. Let's not cripple our creative and innovative health care system.
